Peru`s Animation History – Part 1
This is an attempt to summarize the enchanted, unpublished history of Animation in Peru from my experience and personal testimony with limited information and insufficiently reliable sources trying to avoid inaccuracies and speculations. There`s much research to do and sources of information to assemble, details, accurate data which I suspect will be a long task because until 2010, it isn`t possible to review this Audiovisual material donated by Genaro Delgado Parker to the National Library archives due to their pending classification. In addition, we`re missing many other sources to be fairly accurate from the broadcaster, Nicanor Gonzales founder of American TV, media articles and publications from La Prensa newspaper, recordings from Rafael Quiroga`s family, interviews to Lindley`s family and more to have a complete story, the data to be confirmed is regarding to dates:
1. Rafael Seminario Quiroga, Peruvian, self-taught artist, animation director, portrait and landscape architect, writer, cartoonist did his first experiment with animation in the late 40s and went into the production successfully in the early 50s with his most famous short, "Sorpresas Limeñas" & "El lápiz mágico de Rafael Seminario” (1953) showed in Lima by Isaac Lindley, owner of Inca Kola which received extensive coverage by media as the beginning of Animation in Peru. (Source by researcher & writer, Raul Rivera Escobar). After, Rafael Seminario continued developing on his own, encouraging innovation in his own natural style, skillfully in solving problems that appeared on making movies as the purest classical school. His animations were made on acetate, ink, acrylic, brush and airbrush in black, white and full color films of 16 mm.
2. Since the late 50's and 60s, he remains as the only one to do Animation in Peru and the only training staff for it. In these two decades, he made his own way to TV with almost 200 commercials (black and white), these will be the seed for many artists until now.
3. My personal testimony, I just remember the creation and production of animated commercials for the following companies and campaigns.
• Refrescos Bimbo
• Field galletas
• Mutual El pueblo
• Mentol tigre
• Various TV channels cultural programs
• Scala Gigante
• Contrita, etc.…
4. During Juan Velasco`s government were produced the following Animated documentaries, "El Pacto Andino", "Impuestos" and more by Rafael Seminario who appeared in film production credits, soap operas and video tapes for example: "Music composed by Jaime Delgado Aparicio for "El Embajador y Yo" who combines extraordinary jazz rhythms of fashion in the late 60s. In the beginning of this film, Rafael Seminario`s cartoons composition, creativity and brilliance was performed by an orchestra of over 50 musicians playing the main theme.
5. In the 70s and 80s, Rafael Seminario Quiroga still continues working independently and teaching young artists to work in Animated productions who would later being part of “The "Siegfried group” for many projects and films, which at the end did not reach their culmination.
6. In late 70s, we see again in Peru a new group of performers prepared by Rafael Seminario Quiroga, however at this stage "Canned Productions” arrived from abroad, mostly from Japan and the Video tape technology becomes more commercial and cheaper than Celluloid resulting many animated feature films, short projects and series for TV were lacking of funding.
